7 Practical Ways SAP Consultants Can Use ChatGPT Safely

From workshop minutes to ABAP explanations and test scripts, here are seven ways SAP functional and technical consultants can use ChatGPT or any AI assistant, without risking client data or system quality.

SAP consultants write a lot: workshop minutes, functional specs, test scripts, user guides, status reports and ticket updates. General AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot are very good at exactly this kind of work. They are not good at knowing your client's system. Here are seven practical uses that respect that limit.

First, two rules:

  1. Follow your firm's and your client's AI policy. Some clients forbid external AI tools; some provide approved ones.
  2. Anonymise. Replace client names, company codes, vendor and customer names, prices and personal data with placeholders such as Client A or Vendor X.

1. Workshop notes into structured minutes

Paste your rough, anonymised notes and ask for: a summary, decisions, numbered requirements, and open points with owners and dates, with "Not decided" where the notes are unclear. This alone can save an hour after every workshop.

2. First drafts of functional specifications

Give the AI your project's template headings and the requirement, and ask it to mark gaps as [TO CONFIRM] instead of inventing tables, fields or transactions. You fill the gaps from the system. The structure and wording are done in minutes; your time goes into the content.

3. Explaining legacy ABAP

Explain this ABAP code step by step for a developer new to this system.
Then list the tables it reads or changes, and anything risky: performance,
error handling, hard-coded values.
"""
[paste code without client-identifying data]
"""

AI is very good at this. It is less reliable at knowing which function modules, BAPIs or classes exist in your release, so check every object it mentions in the system.

4. Understanding error messages and short dumps

Give the exact message class and number, or the key sections of an ST22 dump, plus when the problem happens (one company code only, after a transport, only in background jobs). Ask for ranked hypotheses and how to confirm each one, not an immediate fix. Then confirm in the system and search SAP Notes yourself. Never quote an SAP Note number from an AI answer without opening it.

5. Test scripts with negative cases

Describe the process and your test script format, and ask for the happy path plus negative and edge cases: missing approvals, price variances, blocked partners, reversals, partial deliveries. Ask for [APP/TCODE] placeholders instead of invented transaction codes. Testing is where AI saves the most time on many projects.

6. Training material from tested scripts

Once a process is tested, turn the script into a user guide for a specific role, a one-page quick-reference card and a short quiz for training sessions. Add your own screenshots from the test system.

7. Clear communication with the business

Ask AI to rewrite a technical design summary in plain language for business users: "what will change in your daily work, in 8 bullet points". Or draft a status report from your weekly notes. Business stakeholders read short, clear updates; long technical documents often go unread.

Where not to rely on AI

  • Exact table names, fields, transaction codes and menu paths for your release
  • Licensing, support dates and product roadmaps: use SAP's official sources
  • Anything about the client's own custom code or configuration that you have not provided
  • Statutory and localisation requirements: use official sources and the client's experts

What about SAP Joule?

SAP also offers its own AI assistant, Joule, inside supported SAP applications. Unlike general chat tools, it can work with application context within the user's authorisations, but availability depends on the product, release and licences. Check SAP's official documentation and the client's basis team before promising anything.
