How to Prepare for a Job Interview With AI, Step by Step

Use ChatGPT or any AI assistant as an interview coach: understand the job description, prepare stories from your experience, practise answers with feedback and plan your questions, without sounding scripted.

An AI assistant can be a patient interview coach that is available at midnight before your interview. It can explain a job description, help you organise your experience into clear stories, ask you practice questions and give feedback. Used well, it makes you more prepared and more confident. Used badly, it makes you sound like everyone else.

Here is a step-by-step method that works for freshers and experienced candidates.

Step 1: Decode the job description

Paste the job description (remove the company name if you prefer) and ask:

Here is a job description:
"""
[paste]
"""
1. Summarise what this role really does day to day, in 5 lines.
2. List the top 6 skills they are looking for, in order of importance.
3. What kind of interview questions should I expect for this role?

This tells you what to prepare first, instead of preparing for everything.

Step 2: Match your experience to the role

Write rough notes about your experience: projects, responsibilities, achievements, tools. Then:

Here are my notes about my experience: [paste].
For each of the top 6 skills in the job description, tell me which part of
my experience is the best evidence, and where I have a gap.
Be honest about gaps.

For any gap, decide how you will talk about it honestly: a course you are taking, a related project, or how you learn quickly.

Step 3: Turn experience into STAR stories

Interviewers remember stories, not lists. The STAR format keeps answers clear: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Help me turn this experience into a STAR answer for the question
"Tell me about a time you solved a difficult problem":
[describe what happened in your own words].
Keep my real facts. Do not invent numbers. Under 150 words.

"Do not invent numbers" is important. If the AI adds "reduced costs by 30%" and you cannot explain it, the interview will go badly. Use only real results you can talk about.

Prepare 5 to 6 stories that cover common themes: a problem you solved, a mistake you learned from, working in a team, handling pressure, and something you are proud of.

Step 4: Run a mock interview

This is where AI really helps. Ask it to interview you, one question at a time:

Act as an interviewer for the role above. Ask me one question at a time,
wait for my answer, then give short feedback: what was good, what was
unclear, and one way to improve. Mix technical and behavioural questions.
Start when I say "ready".

Answer as you would in the real interview. Typing is fine, but speaking your answers aloud (many apps support voice) is even better practice.

Step 5: Polish your answers, not your personality

After the mock interview, ask:

Based on my answers, what are my 3 biggest weaknesses as a candidate in
this interview, and how can I fix each one before tomorrow?

Then practise again. Keep your own words. If an answer sounds too polished or full of buzzwords, say it more simply. Interviewers can tell when an answer is memorised.

Step 6: Prepare your questions

At the end of most interviews you will be asked, "Do you have any questions for us?" Good questions show genuine interest.

Suggest 8 thoughtful questions I could ask at the end of an interview for
this role, about the team, the work and how success is measured.
Avoid questions about salary for the first round.

Choose two or three that you genuinely want answered.

Step 7: The day before

  • Research the company yourself on its official website and recent news. Do not rely on AI for facts about a specific company, because it can be outdated or wrong.
  • Re-read your STAR stories once, out loud.
  • Prepare a 60-second "tell me about yourself" answer and practise it with the AI giving feedback on clarity and length.

What not to do

  • Do not use AI during a live interview unless the employer has explicitly allowed it. It is usually considered dishonest and is often easy to spot.
  • Do not claim experience you do not have. Follow-up questions will expose it.
  • Do not paste confidential details from your current employer into a public AI tool.

The real benefit

The biggest benefit of AI interview practice is not perfect answers. It is that you walk in having already answered the hard questions several times. That confidence shows.
