Lesson 2 of 2 · AI for SAP Consultants: Specs, ABAP, Testing and Support
SAP Joule and SAP Business AI, Explained Simply
What SAP's built-in AI is, how it differs from ChatGPT-style tools, what it can do inside SAP applications, and how to find out what your client actually has.
Clients increasingly ask their consultants, "What about SAP's AI? Should we use Joule?" You do not need to be an AI expert to answer well. You need a clear picture of what SAP's AI is, how it differs from general tools, and how to find out what is actually available in a given landscape.
SAP Business AI: the umbrella
SAP Business AI is SAP's name for the AI capabilities built into its products. Instead of one separate tool, AI features appear inside SAP applications: for example, suggestions, predictions, document processing and natural-language help, depending on the product.
Joule: SAP's AI assistant
Joule is SAP's AI assistant, or copilot. Users can ask questions or give instructions in natural language inside supported SAP applications, and Joule can respond using the context of that application and the user's permissions.
Typical kinds of things a copilot like Joule is designed to help with:
- Finding information or navigating to the right app or record
- Summarising business objects or situations
- Starting or assisting with common tasks
- Helping developers in SAP's development tools (where the AI-assisted development features are licensed and enabled)
Exactly what Joule can do depends on the SAP product, the release or cloud version, the region, and the client's licences and setup. SAP extends these capabilities regularly.
How it differs from ChatGPT-style tools
| General AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot) | SAP's built-in AI (Joule, SAP Business AI) | |
|---|---|---|
| Knows your system? | No, only what you paste | Can use application context, within the user's authorisations |
| Data handling | Depends on the tool and plan you use | Runs within SAP's offering, governed by the client's SAP contracts |
| Where it works | Anywhere: browser, apps | Inside supported SAP applications |
| Availability | Sign up and use | Depends on product, release, licence and setup |
| Best for | Drafting, explaining, documentation, learning | In-application tasks on real business data |
For most consultants today, both have a place: general AI for documents, explanations and personal productivity; SAP's AI for in-system assistance where the client has it.
How to find out what your client has
Do not guess or rely on an AI chat answer for this. Instead:
- Check SAP's official sources: SAP's product pages, the SAP Help Portal and the documentation for the client's exact products and releases.
- Ask the client's SAP basis or platform team what is licensed, enabled and configured.
- Check whether it is cloud or on-premise. Many of SAP's newest AI capabilities are delivered first or only in SAP's cloud offerings.
- Check data and compliance approvals. Some organisations need security or legal approval before enabling AI features.
Talking to clients about SAP AI
A useful, honest structure for client conversations:
Help me prepare a one-page briefing for a client steering committee on
SAP Business AI and Joule: what they are in simple terms, three realistic
use cases for a [industry] company using [products], questions to ask SAP
and internal IT about availability and licensing, and risks to consider.
Mark clearly which points must be verified with SAP.
Then verify every product-specific claim in the briefing against SAP's official material before you present it.
Practice task
For your current client or project, write down: which SAP products and releases they use, whether they are cloud or on-premise, and three questions you would ask the basis team and SAP account team about AI availability. Check SAP's Help Portal for the Joule documentation relevant to one of their products.
Key takeaways
- SAP Business AI is SAP's umbrella for AI inside its products; Joule is its AI assistant.
- Unlike general AI tools, Joule can use application context within user authorisations.
- Availability depends on product, release, region, licence and setup; verify, do not guess.
- Use general AI for documents and learning, SAP's AI for in-system tasks where available.
