AI Glossary

What is Deepfake?

An image, video or audio clip created or altered with AI to make it look or sound like a real person said or did something they never did.

AI can now copy faces and voices convincingly. This has creative uses, but it is also used for scams, fake endorsements and misinformation.

Common scams to watch for:

  • A phone or video call that sounds like a family member or your boss urgently asking for money
  • Videos of celebrities "recommending" an investment scheme or product
  • Fake voice notes asking an accounts team to make an urgent payment

How to protect yourself and your business:

  • Verify urgent money requests through a second channel: call back on a known number.
  • Agree on a simple verification step for payments in your team or family.
  • Be sceptical of celebrity endorsements in ads, especially for investments.
  • Never create or share images, videos or voices of real people without their permission.

If you are a victim of online fraud in India, you can report it on the national cybercrime portal (cybercrime.gov.in) or by calling the cybercrime helpline 1930.
