What is Generative AI?
AI that creates new content, such as text, images, audio, video or code, based on a request (prompt), instead of only analysing or classifying existing data.
Older AI systems mostly sorted things: spam or not spam, cat or dog, approve or reject. Generative AI produces something new: an email draft, a summary, a product image, a voice-over or a piece of code.
Examples: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Copilot for text; image generators for pictures and banners; tools that turn text into speech or video.
Good uses at work: first drafts, summaries, ideas, explanations, templates and creative variations.
Cautions: generated content can contain mistakes or invented facts (see Hallucination), and generated images of real products or people can mislead. Always review before you publish or send.
