What is Chatbot (AI Assistant)?

A program you talk to in a chat, by typing or speaking. Modern AI chatbots use large language models to understand free-form questions and write natural replies.

Old chatbots on websites followed fixed scripts and could only answer a few pre-set questions. Modern AI chatbots, often called AI assistants, can handle almost any question in everyday language, keep track of the conversation and help with tasks like writing, summarising and explaining.

Popular examples: ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude and Microsoft Copilot. Compare them in our post ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude vs Copilot.

Tips for better results:

  • Start a new chat for each new task.
  • Give context: who you are, what you need and in what format.
  • Check important facts, numbers and rules yourself.
  • Never share passwords, ID numbers or confidential data.
