Lesson 3 of 8 · Prompt Writing That Works
Examples In, Quality Out: Few-Shot Prompting
Show the AI one or two examples of what you want and it will match your style, tone and format far better than any description.
Describing a style in words is hard. "Friendly but professional" means something different to everyone. Showing an example is easy, and the AI is very good at copying patterns it can see.
Giving examples in your prompt is called few-shot prompting. One example is "one-shot", a few examples is "few-shot".
Why examples work so well
An example answers dozens of questions at once: how long, how formal, which words, what structure, what to leave out. Instead of guessing what you mean by "short and warm", the AI sees it.
A simple pattern
Write product descriptions for our online store in the same style as the
examples below.
Example 1:
Product: Steel water bottle, 1 litre
Description: Keeps water cold for 12 hours. Leak-proof lid, fits most bike
holders. Built for long office days and weekend rides.
Example 2:
Product: Cotton laptop sleeve, 15 inch
Description: Soft padding, slim fit, washable cover. Slides into any backpack
and keeps scratches away.
Now write one for:
Product: Bamboo desk organiser, 4 compartments
The AI will match the length (two to three short sentences), the rhythm (feature, feature, use case) and the tone, without you describing any of it.
Tips for good examples
- Use real examples you like. Your best past email, a post that performed well, a report section your manager praised.
- Two or three is usually enough. More examples cost more reading time and rarely help much.
- Make examples different from each other. If both examples are about bottles, the AI may think every description should mention water.
- Keep the same structure in every example. Consistent labels like
Product:andDescription:make the pattern obvious. - Remove private details from real examples before pasting them.
Examples for format, not just style
Examples are also the easiest way to get a precise format. To turn messy notes into a clean list:
Convert each line of my notes into this exact format.
Example:
Note: called sharma ji re pending bill, he'll pay fri
Output: Sharma Traders | Pending invoice | Promised payment: Friday
Notes:
- spoke to Patel Electricals, want new quote by Monday
- Gupta & Sons asked for GST invoice copy again
When not to use examples
If you want fresh ideas, examples can hold the AI back, because it will stay close to what you showed it. For brainstorming, describe the goal instead, or say:
Here is one example of the kind of idea I mean. Give me 10 ideas that are
very different from it.
Practice task
Find two good examples of something you write often: a client update, a social post, a short report. Remove private details, then use them in a few-shot prompt to write a third one on a new topic. Compare it with what you get from a prompt with no examples.
Key takeaways
- Showing examples beats describing a style in words.
- Two or three varied examples with the same structure are usually enough.
- Use examples to fix format as well as tone.
- For brainstorming, ask for ideas that are different from your example.
