AI Glossary

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Computer systems that perform tasks that normally need human intelligence, such as understanding language, recognising images, making predictions and generating text or pictures.

Artificial intelligence is a broad term for software that can do things we usually associate with human thinking: understanding a question, spotting a pattern, translating a sentence or writing a reply.

Most AI you meet today learns from large amounts of data instead of following rules written by hand. That is why it can handle messy, real-world input like a casually typed question in Hinglish.

Examples in daily life: chat assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini, spam filters in email, face unlock on phones, product recommendations in shopping apps and voice assistants.

What AI is not: it does not understand the world the way people do, and it can be confidently wrong. Treat it as a fast, helpful assistant whose work you check.
