Lesson 3 of 7 · AI for Marketing and Small Business
Product Descriptions and Offers That Sound Like You
Write product descriptions, offers and catalogue text that are clear, honest and in your own voice, for your shop, website, marketplace or WhatsApp catalogue.
A good product description answers the customer's questions before they ask, in a voice that feels like your business. AI can write dozens of descriptions quickly, but without the right input they all sound the same. This lesson shows how to get descriptions that sell and sound like you.
Give the AI facts, not just a product name
"Write a description for a cotton kurta" gives generic text. Give it the facts customers care about:
Write a product description for our online store.
My brief: [paste brief from lesson 1].
Product: Handblock printed cotton kurta, women
Facts: 100% cotton, hand-block printed in Jaipur, sizes S to XXL, length 44
inches, colour may vary slightly because it is hand printed, machine wash
cold, ₹1,450.
Customer worries: will it shrink, is the colour fast, will the size fit.
Format: a one-line headline, 3 short benefit lines, a "Details" list with
the facts, and one line answering each worry. Under 120 words.
Do not add any claim that is not in the facts.
"Do not add any claim that is not in the facts" stops the AI from inventing features like "wrinkle-free" or "organic".
Use a style example
Paste one description you are happy with and ask for others in the same pattern. This is the fastest way to keep 50 product pages consistent:
Here is one of our best product descriptions:
"""
[paste]
"""
Write descriptions for these products in exactly the same structure and
tone: [paste product facts as a list].
Different channels, different lengths
| Channel | What works |
|---|---|
| Website product page | Headline, benefits, full details, care and FAQs |
| Marketplace listing | Clear title with key terms, bullet points following the marketplace's rules |
| WhatsApp Business catalogue | Short: name, price, 2 key details |
| Instagram post | Hook, one benefit, price or "DM for price", call to action |
Ask for one product in all four versions at once to save time.
Writing offers
Offers work when they are simple, real and time-bound:
Create 3 offer ideas for Diwali for my bakery that protect my margin.
Budget: up to 10% discount or a free add-on worth up to ₹100.
For each: the offer in one line, who it is for, and a short WhatsApp
message announcing it, with the end date [DATE].
Before you publish any offer:
- Check the maths: what does the discount cost you per order?
- State terms clearly: dates, minimum order, areas covered.
- Do not create fake urgency ("only 2 left!") if it is not true.
Honest claims only
Advertising in India is expected to be honest and not misleading; the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) publishes guidelines that brands are expected to follow. In practice, for a small business:
- No health, medical or "guaranteed result" claims you cannot prove.
- No "best in India" or "No. 1" unless you can show evidence.
- Fake reviews or made-up testimonials are never acceptable.
- Mention conditions on offers clearly.
Ask the AI to check your copy:
Review this product description and offer for any claim that could be
seen as exaggerated, misleading or impossible to prove. Suggest an honest
alternative for each.
Practice task
Pick your 5 best-selling products. Write a fact list and the top customer worries for each. Use AI to create descriptions in your style for your main channel, then review them for honest claims. Update your listings.
Key takeaways
- Give the AI real facts and customer worries, and forbid invented claims.
- Use one good description as a pattern for consistency.
- Adapt length and structure to each channel.
- Make offers simple, real and time-bound, and keep every claim honest.
